"The book comes in two major sections. First you’ll read a series of hand examples. These examples are designed to show you the difference between how a typical no-limit hold’em player thinks and how a professional-level player thinks. Each of these hand examples represents a small improvement you can make in your play. The second section turns the lessons from the first section into missions you can do on your own. These missions are the equivalent of recipes in a book on nutrition or exercises in a workout book. Doing the missions—doing them as often and using as much your brain on them as possible—are what will make you a better poker player. Do the missions, and you’ll see results. Ignore the missions, and you likely won’t." from the Foreword by Ed Miller -Author of Playing the Player, How To Read Hands At No-Limit Hold’em, Small Stakes Hold’em

Two green $25 chips. That, a little less, is the price of this book. If you play for pennies or the information in the book doesn't win you a pot or two, it is over-priced. I bought it; I read it; I have made much more than the price of the book. And that's net, counting the times the book cost me a bit of money, over a very short period of time.
Also, the book is easy to follow and fun to read. It's hard to beat that combination. I have seen some complaints about the way the hands are diagrammed and, of course, that's a very personal thing. The setup might not work for everyone but I think most people should be able to follow it easily.
The plays described sometimes cost the player some money and, in an infinite universe, there will probably be someone who loses every time he or she tries one of these moves. I'm glad that player isn't me. The book gives you weapons to battle the self-conscious tight-aggressive players who love to bet/fold or raise/fold.
Hull's idea that you can get some idea from bet sizing is strong _except_ that you have to identify the players who don't see a relationship between pot size and bet size. You can't assume anything when one of these guys bets ten dollars into a fifty dollar pot except "he bet ten dollars."
The book isn't quite a five because it _is_ a collection of plays. There is a good deal of "connective tissue" but some of it is just isolated plays.

Poker Plays You Can Use edition by Doug Hull Ed Miller Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews

I have read numerous books about Texas Holdem. This book provided new information and concepts which I had not seen in the other books I read. It also provided practical suggestions on how to incorporate these ideas into my game. It is well organized and entertaining to read.

I am still in the process of digesting the book. I am practicing the concepts presented, and I have already seen some improvement in my play.

When I have incorporated these ideas into my game correctly, I believe I will reach a much higher level as a player.
Great book. I consistently enjoy Miller's writing. I think reading these books and practicing what they teach has made me a beast at local live 1-2 and 2-5 games. If you use a tenth of what is in this book, you'll be better than 90% of the players at that level. I look forward to more Hull books. Good insight. Good writing. Nice price. Thanks.
Good book and easy to understand and read through. I've always liked Doug's material, he is always easy to understand. This book will certainly add value to your game. Even plug some leaks! I have found that I have won more pots and sniffed out more bluffs and other tells at a table after reading this. It's worth the price and should be in your poker library. It's definitely a top 5 poker book in my opinion.
This is without a doubt the best book a player in the $1 - $2 and $2 - $5 no limit cash games can own. This book builds upon the concepts from Ed Miller's Playing the Player and How to Read Hands at No-Limit Hold'em books to actual hands played by Doug Hull. I have learned to exploit other's playing errors, but also recognize flaws in my game to eliminate. Doug shows you not only he played a hand (with exceptional analysis I might add), but how to incorporate his play into your game with the "Poker Missions" in the last half of the book.

The layout in this book is different, and better, than other poker books to better teach the idea.

I thought so much of this book that after I purchased the paperback book, I also purchased the version, so that when I'm at the casino I can refer back to this great book.
The first half of the book has hand examples spelling out a lot of important scenarios. The second half has specific missions to do at the real table to improve your play. I like the format and I like the aggressive style the author is proposing. One issue I had at the beginning of each section there are a slew of icons (instead of words) describing the villain's flaw and hero's exploit. I don't understand why he uses icons for this and not words. There is a glossary of the icons at the beginning of the book. However, since I have the version, it's really hard to get back to where I was after scrolling back the the beginning of the book, so I just ignore that stuff mostly.
This is one of my favorite poker books. Straight forward and readable, it describes very specific scenarios based on real world low stakes hands played by the author. It is loaded with excellent advice for using current "mathematical" approach at low stakes, and how to spot player tendencies and when to take advantage of them (and when not to). While the example hands are very specific, the principles and advice are quite general and it has been very easy for me to apply ideas from this book in my play. Much of the advice is just common sense if you play mathematically already (i.e., put your opponent on a range of hands and estimate your equity) but for me it crystalized some of these ideas and clarified my thinking quite a lot. More than anything this book gives me confidence that I am on the right track.
I anxiously started reading the various plays to see how to better exploit the donks on the strip, but about a third of the way into the book I was recognizing dumb plays that *I* make. This book might make me more money by plugging my leaks rather than adding bullets to my gun!

Read it over quickly and note the most interesting plays. Then study each play in detail and at length noting your own leaks. Then go back again looking at your leaks.

I haven't tried the "missions" yet but the hand-by-hand section is just pure gold. It presents practical examples that might actually happen in a real cash game. Gus Hansen's Every Hand Revealed was a hand-by-hand book that focused on high-level tournament play. And, while excellent for its purpose, wasn't as practical for low-level tournaments -- let alone cash games. This book fills that gap. Real-world practical situations and advice.

This book is an instant classic and will pay for itself over and over if you are a ring game player. No serious student can afford to ignore it. `Nuff said.
